Who is Jim Ferguson?

Jim Ferguson, is a Kansas based broadcaster and writer that has won the Kansas Association of Broadcasters First Place Award for Excellence in Broadcasting in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007 with his outdoor program the Great American Outdoor Trails Radio Magazine.

He's also an award winning writer who in 2000 won the Kansas Press Associations' Excellence in Journalism Award. In 2005 the Outdoor Writers Association of America awarded him a First and Second Place award in their national competition and in 2006 two third place awards in their national competition.

Jim's broadcasting and writings draw upon more than 47 years of hunting and fishing experiences. His photographs have been covers on Texas Bass Magazine, Ohio Magazine, Oil & Gas Journal, Northeast Oil Reporter, Gulf Coast Oil World, and on several outdoor publications. He has been an outdoor writer for over 30 years writing for several outdoor publications like Outdoor Life, Premission to Hunt, Christian Outdoorsman and Texas Bass.

In some respects, Jim's story is a simple one. He grew up on a small farm near Detroit Michigan, where his passion was fishing, hunting and observing wildlife. Through high school and college he hunted and fished with his best friend; his Dad. Through the years their travels took them from Alaska, Canada and throughout the lower 48 hunting and fishing. It wasn't enough for Jim to know he could catch fish he had to know why. The same was true with hunting.

After building a successful communication construction business in the late 1970's, Jim went to work for Hart Publications in Denver, Colorado. He was hired as publisher of a new oil magazine that covered seismic exploration to refining. Later he would assume the publisher position for Hart in Houston to cover the Gulf Coast. He then purchased a publication called Texas Bass News and converted it to a four-color publication called Texas Bass Magazine. Finally, Jim was in his element. He was now writing, publishing and fishing.

Jim started fishing tournaments, writing for his own magazine and writing for others like Outdoor Life. His travels have taken him to the Arctic Circle for Moose, the Alaska Peninsula for brown bear and Manitoba for whitetail deer. In all he has taken 19 of the 29 North American big game animals with three Pope and Young and three Boone & Crocket trophies. He hunts with a bow, blackpowder rifle and shotgun.

One month after 9-11, Jim embarked on his latest project. He started a radio program called Great American Outdoor Trails Radio Magazine. He began a new career hosting this weekly program on a single station in Goodland, Kansas. In late 2002 he added a second station and now his affiliate station network is in excess of 64 stations from Montrose, Colorado to Evansville, Indiana.

Over 350 celebrities have appeared on his program. Personalities like Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker, Tony Makris, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Sugar Ray Leonard, Diana Rupp, Thomas McIntyre, Jim Zumbo, Mike Huckabee, Bob Rich, Andy Mill, Babe Winkelman, Al Linder and a host of others have been his guest. Jim's depth of knowledge of hunting and fishing is his biggest asset.

Jim has been a guest on numerous television programs and is considering adding a television version of the Great American Outdoor Trails Radio Magazine in the near future. As he would say, he's now the new 40 so he better get started doing something... now that he knows what he wants to be.

His love of writing, broadcasting, hunting and fishing are only eclipsed by the love for his family; with wife Terrie, sons and grandchildren.
